James Bay Hold Back the River lyrics

Tried to keep you close to me
But life got inbetween
Tried to square not being there
But think that I should have been

Hold back the river, let me look in your eyes
Hold back the river, so I
Stop for a minute and see where you hide
Hold back the river, hold back

Once upon a different life
We rode our bikes into the sky
But now we crawl against the time
Those distant days are flashing by

Hold back the river, let me look in your eyes
Hold back the river, so I
Stop for a minute and be by your side
Hold back the river, hold back

Hold back the river, let me look in your eyes
Hold back the river so I
Stop for a minute and see where you hide
Hold back the river, hold back

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh

Lonely water, lonely water
Won't you let us wonder
Let us hold each other
Lonely water, lonely water
Won't you let us wonder
Let us hold each other

Hold back the river, let me look in your eyes
Hold back the river, so I
Stop for a minute and be by your side
Hold back the river, hold back

Hold back the river, let me look in your eyes
Hold back the river, so I
Stop for a minute and be by your side
Hold back the river, oh
Lonely water, lonely water
Won't you let us wander
Let us hold each other
Lonely water, lonely water
Won't you let us wander
Let us hold each other

Overview

Hold Back the River is a guitar driven coming-of-age song by the British singer James Bay. It was released in the UK as a single from Bay’s debut studio album, Chaos and the Calm, on 17 November 2014. Iain Archer helped in writing the song and Jacquire King produced it.

Idea for the Song:
The song was written during Bay’s first busy phase as a performing artist. He had started becoming alienated from friends and family due to the busy touring schedule and it was affecting him emotionally. The some is a tribute to those feelings of love and companionship that you feel when being away from loved ones. According to Bay, the emotion conveyed in the song is that “even if I’m not present physically, I’m always there for you”.

Song facts:
1. Hold Back the River was an immediate hit, peaking at #2 on the UK singles chart.

2. The song was also the last one to be written for his LP. It came in at the later stages of the album’s production but was a welcome addition.

3. Bay penned the song just after a headlining gig in London. He was looking forward to meeting the audience after the show but was unable to do so. This triggered a deep sense of melancholy and he tried to capture the emotion in this song.

Best Part for Ringtone
The song has a really catchy part from 1:32 to 1:59. There are a lot of different voices and instruments that come in here, making it an ideal section for a good ringtone.
